Kathy Baker (born June 8, 1950) is an American film and television actress. She began her career in the 1980s, appearing in several television movies and series, and later starred in the films The Right Stuff (1983), Street Smart (1987), The Accidental Tourist (1988), Edward Scissorhands (1990), The Cider House Rules (1999), Cold Mountain (2003), and Cake (2014).
Baker was born in Midland, Texas, the daughter of John Seawand Baker, a geologist, and Helen Mary Baker, a homemaker. She has an older sister, Nancy. Baker attended high school in Lafayette, Colorado. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1972.
Baker’s first acting role was in a 1978 episode of The Waltons. She followed this with guest appearances on several other television series in the late 1970s and early 1980s, including Quincy, M.E., Taxi, and Simon & Simon. In 1983, she starred in the television movie The Right Stuff as Annie Glenn, wife of astronaut John Glenn.
Baker’s first major film role was in the 1987 drama Street Smart, opposite Morgan Freeman. She later starred in the 1988 comedy The Accidental Tourist, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She also appeared in the 1990 Tim Burton film Edward Scissorhands, as well as the 1999 drama The Cider House Rules and the 2003 Civil War drama Cold Mountain.
Baker has been married three times: to Richard Bradford from 1972 to 1975; to Stan Zbornak from 1979 to 1983; and to Donald Camillieri from 1986 to present. She has two sons: Sam Bradford and Will Camillieri.
