Jonny Greenwood is an English musician and composer best known as the lead guitarist and keyboardist of the alternative rock band Radiohead. He is also a member of the supergroup Atoms for Peace. Greenwood was born in Oxford, England, on November 5, 1971. His parents were both academics. His father, David, was a professor of mathematics, and his mother, Sheila, was a teacher. Greenwood has two older sisters, Susan and Judy. He was educated at Abingdon School, a boarding school in Oxfordshire. He began playing the guitar when he was seven and the piano when he was nine.
He started writing his own music at the age of eleven. Greenwood joined Radiohead in 1991, when the band was still called On a Friday. He has been with the band ever since. Greenwood is a self-taught musician. He learned to play the guitar by watching videos of Jimi Hendrix and listening to records by Led Zeppelin and The Edge of U2. He also plays the bass guitar, drums, and keyboards. He has been credited with adding a “classical” sensibility to Radiohead’s music.
Greenwood has composed several film scores, including “Bodysong” (2003), “There Will Be Blood” (2007), “The Master” (2012), and “Inherent Vice” (2014). He has also released three solo albums: “Bodysong” (2003), “Jonny Greenwood Is the Controller” (2007), and “Phosphor” (2010). Greenwood is married to Sharona Katan, a visual artist. They have two children, Otis and Alma.

Quotes

1 | Jamaican reggae is the style of music I always reach for when ranting to friends about how you could listen to one style of music exclusively for the rest of your life - and it would all be great and varied and worth hearing. |
2 | At least we played well. But I don't think the irony was lost on people. All these gorgeous, bikinied girls shaking their mammary glands, and we're playing Creep and looking terrible. |
3 | Most prog is awful. I've got it into my head that prog rock must be good because it attracted a lot of fans. But so far, I've just trawled through fairly tedious Genesis albums. |
4 | I think guitarists are really over-admired and over-revered. I don't mind when people are telling me about their 1971 Firebird, but it's the same thing as people telling me about their car or something. It's fine if you have an interest. By talking with me though, you could be interviewing a novelist about guitars. It's the same thing, except I don't write that well either. I like my guitar and I enjoy playing it. |
