Noble was born in Port Pirie, South Australia, the son of Jennifer (née Chalmers), a schoolteacher, and Ronald Noble, a police officer. He has two sisters, Gillian and Nicola. He attended Flinders University Drama Centre in Adelaide, South Australia.
Noble’s first film role was that of a policeman in the Australian film The Fringe Dwellers (1986), which he followed with roles in such films as The Good Wife (1987), The Year My Voice Broke (1987), and Dead Calm (1989).
In 2001, Noble began his role as Dr. Walter Bishop in the American television series Fringe. He has received critical acclaim for his performance on the show, and has been nominated for several awards, including the Saturn Award for Best Actor on Television and the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
Noble has also had roles in such films as The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003), The Last Samurai (2003), and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012).
Noble has been married to Penny Noble since 1985. They have two children, Daniel and Sophie.
