John Dennis was born on October 12, 1857, in Boston, Massachusetts. His parents were John Dennis and Sarah (Dwight) Dennis. He had two brothers and two sisters. His early education was at the Boston Latin School. He then attended Harvard College, where he graduated in 1880.
Dennis began his career as a lawyer. He then became active in politics, and was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1884. He served in the House until 1887. He was then elected to the Massachusetts Senate, and served in that body until 1891. In 1892, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, and served in that body until 1895.
In 1896, Dennis was nominated by the Republican Party for Governor of Massachusetts. He was defeated in the general election by Democrat Roger Wolcott.
In 1898, Dennis was appointed by President William McKinley as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury. He served in that position until 1900. In 1901, he was appointed by President Theodore Roosevelt as Commissioner of Corporations. He served in that position until 1903.
In 1904, Dennis was again elected to the United States House of Representatives. He served in that body until 1907. In 1908, he was once again nominated by the Republican Party for Governor of Massachusetts. He was defeated in the general election by Democrat Eben S. Draper.
In 1909, Dennis was appointed by President William Howard Taft as a member of the United States Tariff Commission. He served on the Commission until 1913.
In 1914, Dennis was again elected to the United States House of Representatives. He served in that body until 1921. In 1922, he was once again nominated by the Republican Party for Governor of Massachusetts. He was defeated in the general election by Democrat Channing H. Cox.
Dennis died on December 28, 1928, in Boston, Massachusetts.
