Joan Brown was born in San Francisco on February 28, 1938. Her parents were both artists, and she showed an early interest in art. She took classes at the San Francisco Art Institute and the California College of Arts and Crafts. After graduation, she moved to New York City, where she studied with Abstract Expressionist painter Hans Hofmann. Brown quickly developed her own style, which combined Abstract Expressionism with figuration. In the 1960s, she became associated with the Bay Area Figurative Movement.
Brown’s early paintings often featured women in everyday situations. In the 1970s, she began to experiment with other subjects, including still lifes, landscapes, and animals. She also started to use found objects in her work, incorporating items such as buttons, fabric, and leaves into her paintings.
Brown’s work was included in a number of important exhibitions, including the Whitney Biennial and the Venice Biennale. She also had solo shows at major museums such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C.
Brown died of cancer in 1990.
