Jean Kennedy Smith (born February 20, 1928) is an American diplomat, author, and philanthropist. She is the eighth of nine children born to Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. Her siblings include President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and Senator Ted Kennedy.
Smith is the widow of Stephen Edward Smith, Jr., whom she married in 1956. The couple had four children: Stephen, William, Amanda, and Kym.
A graduate of Manhattanville College, Smith began her career as a teacher in New York City. She later worked as a staff assistant for her brother John’s presidential campaign in 1960. After his election, she served as the First Lady’s social secretary from 1961 to 1963.
In 1964, Smith moved to Rome with her husband and children, where she worked at the U.S. Embassy. She later served as Chief of Protocol for the U.S. Mission to the United Nations from 1969 to 1976.
In the 1980s, Smith became involved in several philanthropic endeavors, including serving as the honorary chair of the Special Olympics and as a founding member of the Kennedy Center Honors Committee. She also served on the boards of numerous organizations, including the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation and the American Red Cross.
Smith was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 by President Barack Obama.
