John Lister Hill was born on December 29, 1869, in Clay County, Alabama. His parents were John Hill, a planter, and Sarah Lister Hill. He had four brothers and two sisters. He attended public schools in Alabama and graduated from the University of Alabama in 1891. He then studied law at the University of Virginia and was admitted to the bar in 1893.
Hill began his political career as a member of the Alabama House of Representatives from 1897 to 1901. He then served in the United States House of Representatives from 1901 to 1907. In 1907, he was elected to the United States Senate, where he served until his death in office in 1934.
During his time in the Senate, Hill was a strong supporter of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal. He was also a leading advocate for agricultural and rural development. In addition, he served on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and was a vocal opponent of Japanese aggression in Asia.
Hill died on August 7, 1934, in Washington, D.C. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
