Hussein of Jordan was born on November 14, 1935, in Amman, Jordan. His parents were Talal bin Abdullah and Zein al-Sharaf. Hussein has four siblings: Abdullah II, Crown Prince of Jordan; Princess Alia; Princess Haya; and Prince Faisal. Hussein was educated at the Victoria College in Alexandria, Egypt; the Millfield School in Somerset, England; and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Berkshire, England.
Hussein began his career in the Jordanian Army in 1954. He became a Captain in the Arab Legion in 1960. In 1961, Hussein became the Commander of the Jordanian Special Forces. In 1962, he became the Commander-in-Chief of the Jordanian Army. In 1965, Hussein became the Crown Prince of Jordan. In 1967, he became the King of Jordan.
Hussein’s reign was marked by political and economic stability. He worked to maintain good relations with Western powers, while also improving relations with Arab states. Hussein also made significant strides in improving the status of women and minorities in Jordan.
Hussein had four wives: Toni Avril Gardner (m. 1961-1972); Alia Baha el-Din Touqan (m. 1972-1977); Lisa Najeeb Halaby (m. 1978-2004); and Queen Noor Al-Hussein (m. 2004-present). He had twelve children: Abdullah II, Crown Prince of Jordan; Princess Alia; Princess Haya; Prince Faisal; Princess Aisha; Princess Zein; Prince Ali; Prince Hamzah; Prince Hashem; Princess Iman; Princess Raiyah; and Princess Haya.
Hussein was diagnosed with cancer in 1992. He underwent treatment in the United States and England. Hussein died on February 7, 1999, at the age of 63.
