Gwen Stewart was born on October 23, 1963, in San Francisco, California. She is the youngest of three children. Her father was a jazz musician and her mother was a homemaker. Stewart began singing and dancing at an early age. She attended San Francisco State University, where she studied music and dance.
Career
In 1990, Stewart joined the R&B group En Vogue. The group became one of the best-selling girl groups of all time. They released their debut album, Funky Divas, in 1992. The album spawned the hit singles “Hold On” and “Free Your Mind”. En Vogue released three more albums before disbanding in 1997.
In 1998, Stewart began a solo career. She released her debut album, Gwen Stewart, that year. The album failed to gain traction and she was dropped from her record label. Stewart continued to write and record music, but she did not release another album until 2006. In 2006, she released The Gwen Stewart Experience. The album received positive reviews from critics.
In recent years, Stewart has focused on writing and producing music for other artists. She has also appeared as a judge on reality television shows such as American Idol and The X Factor.
