Gustav Mahler was born in Kalischt, Bohemia, on July 7, 1860. His father, Bernhard Mahler, was a distiller and tavern owner, and his mother, Marie (née Krebs) Mahler, was a cook. Gustav had two younger brothers, Otto and Heinrich. Otto died in infancy, and Heinrich committed suicide in 1909. Gustav’s early education was provided by his father and private tutors. He showed an early interest in music and was particularly fond of the works of Franz Schubert.

Mahler’s career began as a conductor. He held posts in several German opera houses, including the Hamburg Opera and the Vienna Court Opera. In 1897, he was appointed director of the Vienna Philharmonic. He held this post until 1907, when he resigned due to disagreements with the orchestra’s management.

Mahler’s compositional career began in earnest in 1888 with the completion of his First Symphony. This work was followed by a series of highly successful symphonies, including the Second (1894), Third (1896), and Fourth (1900). His Fifth Symphony, which premiered in 1904, is considered one of his finest works.

In 1907, Mahler left Vienna to take up the post of conductor of the New York Philharmonic. He held this position for three years, during which time he composed his Sixth Symphony. In 1910, he returned to Europe, where he served as conductor of the Royal Opera House in London and the Paris Opera.

Mahler’s health began to decline in the early 1920s, and he died of a heart attack on May 18, 1911, at the age of 50.

During his lifetime, Mahler was widely regarded as one of the greatest conductors and composers of his day. His symphonies are among the most performed works in the classical repertoire. Mahler’s net worth at the time of his death was estimated to be $2 million.
