Gillian Taylforth is an English actress. She is known for her roles as Kathy Beale in the BBC soap opera EastEnders, Jackie Mitchell in the ITV soap opera Footballers’ Wives and Hazel Savage in the BBC medical drama Holby City.
Taylforth was born in Islington, London, on 14 August 1955. Her parents were George Taylforth, a carpenter, and Joan Taylforth (née Webb), a housewife. She has two brothers, Gary and Darren. Taylforth was educated at Dame Alice Owen’s School in Islington.
Taylforth began her career as a child actress, appearing in the 1967 film Smashing Time. She went on to appear in a number of television programmes, including Z-Cars, The Bill and Casualty. In 1985, she joined the cast of EastEnders as Kathy Beale. She remained in the role for 19 years, before leaving in 2004.
In 2007, Taylforth joined the cast of Footballers’ Wives as Jackie Mitchell. She appeared in the show for two years, before leaving in 2009.
In 2010, Taylforth joined the cast of Holby City as Hazel Savage. She remained in the role for two years, before leaving in 2012.
Taylforth has been married twice. Her first marriage was to Geoff Knights, with whom she has two daughters, Hannah and Holly. The marriage ended in divorce in 2002. Her second marriage is to Dave Fairbairn, with whom she has a son, Jack.
