Georgina Grenville (born October 3, 1966) is an English actress. She is best known for her role as Elizabeth I in the 1998 film Elizabeth.

Early Life

Grenville was born in London, England, the daughter of Rosemary (née Harris), a nurse, and John Grenville, a doctor. She has two sisters, Jane and Sarah. Grenville was educated at St Paul’s Girls’ School in London and then at Newnham College, Cambridge, where she studied English literature.

Career

Grenville began her career as a stage actress, appearing in productions of Shakespeare’s plays at the Globe Theatre in London and the Royal Shakespeare Company. She made her film debut in the 1992 film Orlando, playing the title character’s mother. She went on to appear in such films as The Madness of King George (1994), Sense and Sensibility (1995), The Man in the Iron Mask (1998), and Shakespeare in Love (1998).

In 1998, Grenville played Elizabeth I in the film Elizabeth. The film was a critical and commercial success, and Grenville’s performance earned her a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. She has since appeared in such films as The Importance of Being Earnest (2002), Bright Young Things (2003), and Pride & Prejudice (2005).

In 2006, Grenville made her West End theatre debut in a production of The Importance of Being Earnest. She has since appeared in several other West End productions, including The Seagull (2007) and The Cherry Orchard (2009).

Grenville has also appeared on television, most notably in the BBC series The House of Eliott (1991-1993). She also had a recurring role in the ITV series Downton Abbey (2012-2015).
