He had four brothers and sisters: William, John, Harriet, and Arthur. His early education was at the Peterborough Grammar School and the Ontario Agricultural College. He worked on his father’s farm for a time before moving to California in 1890.

He found work as a clerk in a real estate office in Oakland. He later became interested in newspaper publishing and worked for a time as a reporter for the Oakland Tribune. In 1897, he and his brother William purchased the San Bernardino Valley Index. He later bought out his brother’s interest in the paper and became its sole owner. He changed the name of the paper to the San Bernardino Daily Sun.

Under his ownership, the Sun became one of the most successful newspapers in Southern California. He later purchased the San Bernardino Evening Telegram and the Redlands Citrograph. He also owned radio station KBSA in San Bernardino.

George Knowland was an active Republican and served as a delegate to several Republican National Conventions. He was also a member of the Masons and the Elks.

He married Lillian May Wilson in 1896. The couple had two children: George Arthur, Jr. and Harriet Ann. His wife died in 1927. He married Ruth E. Clifford in 1928. The couple had no children.

George Arthur Knowland died on February 16, 1946, in San Bernardino, California. He was 77 years old.
