Short Info
Died | February 19, 1837, Zürich, Switzerland |
Fact | In 1832, he was engaged to Wilhelmine Jaeglé (1810-1880). |
Georg Büchner was born on October 17, 1813, in the city of Darmstadt, Germany. He was the second of six children born to Franziska and Johann Georg Büchner. His father was a doctor and his mother was the daughter of a prosperous merchant. Büchner’s childhood was a happy one, despite the fact that his father died when he was just seven years old.
Büchner was an excellent student, and he won a scholarship to study at the prestigious University of Heidelberg when he was just 17 years old. He initially studied medicine, like his father, but he quickly became more interested in the humanities and social sciences. He became involved in the student movement at Heidelberg, and he became friends with a number of radical thinkers, including Karl Marx.
Büchner’s political views led to him being expelled from Heidelberg in 1835. He moved to Zurich, where he continued his studies and also began to write plays. His most famous play, “Danton’s Death”, was written in 1835 and is considered to be one of the greatest plays of the 19th century.
Büchner’s health began to decline in 1836, and he died of typhus on February 19, 1837, at the age of 23. Despite his short life, Büchner was a hugely influential writer, and his work continues to be read and performed all over the world.
