Fred Thompson was born on August 19, 1942, in Sheffield, Alabama, the son of Ruth Inez (née Bradley) and Fletcher Session Thompson, Sr. His father was a World War II veteran and an automobile salesman. His mother was a schoolteacher. He has one sister, Sarah Jane. Thompson attended high school in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, graduating in 1960. He then attended Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis), where he earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and political science in 1964. He was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Thompson went on to earn his Juris Doctor degree from Vanderbilt University Law School in 1967.
