Frank Buckles was born on February 1, 1901, in Bethany, Missouri. His parents were James Buckles and Sarah Buckles. He had four siblings: James, Sarah, Mary and John. He attended high school in Bethany, Missouri. After high school, he attended Central Missouri State Teachers College, now known as the University of Central Missouri. He graduated in 1921 with a degree in agriculture.
Buckles began his career as a shipping clerk for the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C. In December 1941, he enlisted in the United States Army. He served in the Philippines during World War II and was captured by the Japanese in 1942. He was held as a prisoner of war until 1945. After the war, he returned to the United States and worked for the Veterans Administration. He retired in 1966.
Buckles was the last surviving American veteran of World War I. He died on February 27, 2011, at the age of 110.

He and wife Louise became "adopted" parental figures to young actor Jimmy Lydon. He was 'best man' at Lydon's 1952 wedding and godfather to his oldest daughter. After his death, Lydon became Louise's guardian for 18 years until her death at the age of 97.
