Elliott Smith was an American singer-songwriter and musician who rose to prominence in the mid-1990s. His work is characterized by its introspective and often melancholic lyrics, and he was a master of the guitar. He won critical acclaim for his debut album, “Elliott Smith” (1994), and he went on to release five more albums before his untimely death in 2003.
Smith was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on August 6, 1969. His parents divorced when he was young, and he was raised by his mother in Texas. He began playing the guitar at the age of 14, and he soon began writing his own songs. He attended the University of Texas at Austin for a year before dropping out and moving to Portland, Oregon, in order to pursue his music career.
Smith’s first album, “Elliott Smith”, was released on the independent label Cavity Search in 1994. It was met with critical acclaim, and Smith soon signed with the major label DreamWorks Records. His second album, “Either/Or”, was released in 1997 and is considered one of his best works. It includes the song “Miss Misery”, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Smith’s third album, “XO”, was released in 1998. It was a commercial success, but it was not as well-received by critics as his previous albums. His fourth album, “Figure 8”, was released in 2000 and was once again praised by critics.
Smith’s final album, “From a Basement on the Hill”, was posthumously released in 2004. It is a collection of unfinished songs that were recorded before his death.
Smith died of apparent suicide on October 21, 2003. He was 34 years old.
Smith was a highly respected musician, and his work has influenced many other artists. He won several awards during his career, including the prestigious Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance for his song “Miss Misery”.
