Eddie Jones is an English professional rugby union coach and former player. He is the current head coach of the England national team, and has previously coached the Australian national team and Japanese national team.
Born in Dover, Kent, Jones was educated at Dulwich College and then studied economics at the University of Bath. He played rugby union for Bath, Saracens and England. After retiring from playing rugby, Jones became a coach. He has coached at club level with Saracens, Wasps and London Irish, and at international level with Australia, Japan and England.
Jones has been described as one of the best rugby coaches in the world. He has won multiple coaching awards, including World Rugby Coach of the Year in 2007 and 2019. He has also been inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame.
As a player, Jones was a flanker or number eight. He played club rugby for Bath, Saracens and London Irish. He also played provincial rugby for the Barbarians. Jones made his international debut for England in 1984, and went on to earn 46 caps for his country. He played in two Rugby World Cups, in 1987 and 1991. He also captained England on eight occasions.
After retiring from playing rugby, Jones became a coach. He has coached at club level with Saracens, Wasps and London Irish, and at international level with Australia, Japan and England.
Jones was appointed head coach of the Australian national team in 2001. He coached Australia to the 2003 Rugby World Cup final, where they were defeated by England. He then coached Japan from 2012 to 2015, before taking over as head coach of England in 2015.
Under Jones’s coaching, England have won the 2016 Six Nations Championship, the 2017 Six Nations Championship, the 2018 Six Nations Championship and the 2019 Rugby World Cup. They have also been runners-up in the 2017 British & Irish Lions tour to New Zealand.
Jones is married to Hiroko Jones, and they have two daughters together.
