Duff McKagan is an American musician and writer. He is best known for his work with the hard rock band Guns N’ Roses, with whom he achieved worldwide success in the late 1980s and early 1990s. McKagan has also played with the bands Velvet Revolver, Loaded, and Jane’s Addiction. In addition to his musical career, McKagan has also established himself as a writer, publishing two books: It’s So Easy (and other lies) and How to Be a Man (and other illusions).
Born in Seattle, Washington, on February 5, 1964, Duff McKagan was raised in a working-class family. His father was a truck driver and his mother was a secretary. McKagan has two older sisters. He attended Catholic school as a child and was an altar boy. As a teenager, McKagan became interested in music, particularly hard rock and punk rock. He began playing bass guitar after seeing the Sex Pistols perform in 1976.
In 1981, McKagan formed the band Guns N’ Roses with Axl Rose and Tracii Guns. The band quickly gained a following in the Los Angeles music scene. In 1987, they released their debut album, Appetite for Destruction, which went on to become one of the best-selling albums of all time. The band achieved massive success with their follow-up albums, G N’ R Lies (1988) and Use Your Illusion I and II (1991). McKagan co-wrote many of the band’s songs, including “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Paradise City,” and “Sweet Child o’ Mine.”
In 1997, McKagan left Guns N’ Roses and joined the supergroup Velvet Revolver with Slash and Matt Sorum of Guns N’ Roses, and Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots. The band released two albums, Contraband (2004) and Libertad (2007), before disbanding in 2008.
In 2012, McKagan reunited with his former Guns N’ Roses bandmates for a series of highly successful reunion shows. In 2016, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Guns N’ Roses.
McKagan has been married three times. His first marriage was to Linda Johnson from 1990 to 1991. His second marriage was to model Susan Holmes from 1999 to 2007. He has been married to model/actress Olivia Wilde since 2013. He has three daughters: Grace (born 1998), Maeve (born 2006), and Lila (born 2016).
McKagan is 6 feet tall (1.83 m) and has blue eyes.
