David Paich is an American musician, singer, and songwriter best known as a founding member and the primary keyboardist, singer, and composer of the rock band Toto. He has also worked as a session musician, producer, and arranger with a wide variety of artists. Paich was born in Los Angeles, California, on June 25, 1954, the son of Shirley (née Friedman) and Harold Paich. His father was a big band leader and session musician who played piano and organ. His mother was a classically trained pianist. Paich has two younger brothers, Jeff and Steve. Paich was exposed to a wide range of music at an early age. He began taking piano lessons at age five and also learned to play the drums. He attended Grant High School in Van Nuys, where he was a member of the school’s concert and marching bands. He later attended UCLA, where he studied music theory and composition.

Paich began his professional career in the early 1970s as a session musician in Los Angeles. He played on a number of recordings by artists such as Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Jerry Garcia. He also played on the soundtracks of films such as The Sting and Jaws. In 1976, he co-founded the rock band Toto with his childhood friend Steve Lukather. The band’s debut album, Toto, was released in 1978 and was a commercial and critical success. The album included the hit singles “Hold the Line” and “Africa”, which remain two of the band’s best-known songs. Toto went on to release a string of successful albums throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including 1982’s Toto IV, which won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

Paich has also worked as a producer and arranger for other artists. He produced Toto’s 1989 album The Seventh One and co-produced their 1992 album Kingdom of Desire. He has also produced albums for artists such as Ricky Martin and Michael Jackson. In addition to his work with Toto, Paich has also released several solo albums. His most recent album, Transition, was released in 2013.

Paich has been married twice. His first marriage was to actress/model Meryl Marshall from 1982 to 1988. They had two children together: a son, Dylan, and a daughter, Sara. Paich married his second wife, Paige O’Hara, in 1995. They have two children together: a son, Jackson, and a daughter, Lily.

Paich is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He has won four Grammy Awards and has been nominated for nineteen others.

1There's still time. I've told Peter Gabriel and met Sting. I've sent out some feelers. I feel like an eager young kid.... 'If someone can't make it or someone gets sick, tell them to call me!' I've actually done that, believe it or not.
2There's still a couple I'd like to work with that are still on my bucket list. One is The Rolling Stones - I've been a fan forever, and I'd just fit in perfect with that band.
3When Rosanna got record of the year, which was a song very close to my heart, Elton John was the first guy in the audience who stood up and applauded. Elton John, to me, is on the level of The Beatles as far as talent and the legacy he's left. To be respected by even one person of that caliber filled my heart and just validated us in front of everybody.
4We're very sensitive when we get bad reviews. I try to brush them off, but we take them very personal. Over the years we've tried to let it roll off our back. We realize we can't please everybody, but the fact we've been around 35 years and people still enjoy our music says something.
5Now, music seems to be very slick and very produced on computers. Our music now is on the raw side, on The Rolling Stones side. We're a bit looser, and the kids look at us like The Rolling Stones now because we're not auto-tuning the vocals and quantizing the drums and all this stuff. We call it actual reality, not virtual reality. We actually play!
