David Gray (born 13 June 1968) is a British singer-songwriter. He released his first album in 1993 and received worldwide attention after the release of White Ladder in 1998. It was the first of three UK chart-toppers in six years for Gray, of which the latter two also achieved multi-platinum status. White Ladder became the fifth best-selling album of the 2000s in the UK.
Gray has performed at a number of high-profile events, including the opening ceremony of the 2006 Ryder Cup, Live 8 in 2005 and Glastonbury Festival in 2000. Gray is known for his distinctive voice, and his songs have been used in a number of films and television shows.
Gray was born in Sale, Greater Manchester, and raised in Altrincham. His father was a civil engineer and his mother a housewife. He has two sisters. Gray was educated at Brooklands Primary School and Altrincham Grammar School for Boys. He began playing guitar at the age of 14 and started writing songs at the age of 21.
Gray’s musical career began in Manchester, when he would play acoustic sets in various clubs and bars around the city. In 1991, he moved to London and released his first album, A Century Ends. The album was not a commercial success and Gray returned to Manchester.
In 1993, Gray released his second album, Flesh, which was met with critical acclaim but again failed to find a wide audience. The album’s title track was later used in the film Closer (2004).

Gray’s breakthrough came with the release of White Ladder in 1998. The album was an instant success, reaching number one in the UK charts and selling over six million copies worldwide. The album’s success was largely due to the single “Babylon”, which was a top 10 hit in the UK and Ireland.
Gray has since released eight more studio albums, the most recent being Mutineers (2014). His ninth album, Ebb & Flow, is due to be released in 2019.
Gray has been nominated for four Brit Awards and has won two Ivor Novello Awards. In 2013, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music from the University of Manchester.
Gray is married to Olivia Harrison, with whom he has two daughters. His net worth is estimated to be £8 million ($10 million).
