Dana Altman (born October 1, 1952) is an American college basketball coach. He is currently the head coach of the University of Oregon men’s basketball team.
Altman was born in Falls City, Nebraska. He is the son of a high school basketball coach and the youngest of three children. Altman attended Creighton Preparatory School in Omaha, Nebraska, where he played basketball and baseball. He then went on to attend Creighton University, also in Omaha.
Altman began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater, Creighton, in 1977. He then spent two years as an assistant at the University of Kansas before becoming the head coach at Marshalltown Community College in Iowa.
In 1984, Altman became the head coach at Eastern New Mexico University. He then spent four seasons as the head coach at Kansas State University before returning to Creighton in 1990. He coached Creighton for 16 seasons, winning five conference championships and making 11 NCAA Tournament appearances.
In 2006, Altman left Creighton to become the head coach at the University of Alabama. He coached Alabama for one season before returning to Creighton.
In 2010, Altman left Creighton again, this time to become the head coach at Oregon. He has coached Oregon for 10 seasons, winning one conference championship and making six NCAA Tournament appearances.
Altman has a career record of 797-438 (.645). He is the winningest coach in Creighton history and the second winningest coach in Oregon history.
Altman is married to his wife, Vicki. They have two children together.
