Conrad Schumann was born on October 15, 1942, in Meissen, Germany. His father was a policeman and his mother was a homemaker. He has two brothers and one sister. He attended primary school in Meissen and then attended the Technical University of Dresden, where he studied electrical engineering.

Conrad Schumann began his career as an engineer with the East German army. He was assigned to work on the Berlin Wall, which was being built to keep East Germans from fleeing to the West. On August 15, 1961, he was photographed leaping over the barbed wire fence that separated East and West Berlin, becoming one of the most iconic images of the Cold War. He later said that he made the decision to defect to the West on the spur of the moment, and that he regretted it almost immediately.

After defecting to the West, Conrad Schumann worked as a janitor and then as a security guard. He later opened a small business. He has been married twice and has four children.
