Cisco’s early education took place at home. His parents were strict Quakers and believed in simple living and self-reliance. Cisco was an excellent student and was interested in music and literature. He also loved to play baseball and was a talented pitcher.

In 1934, at the age of 16, Cisco left home to attend Haverford College, a Quaker school in Pennsylvania. He played baseball for the college team and was also a member of the glee club. He graduated from Haverford in 1938 with a degree in English.

After college, Cisco worked for a time as a journalist. He also did some acting and singing. In 1939, he met Woody Guthrie, who would become his close friend and musical mentor. The two men traveled together and performed at labor rallies and folk festivals.
