Chyna (born Joan Marie Laurer; December 27, 1969 – April 20, 2016) was an American professional wrestler, actress, and reality television personality. She was best known for her time in WWE under the ring name Chyna.

Laurer began her professional wrestling career in 1997, after training with Mark Calaway (better known as The Undertaker). She joined World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1998 and quickly rose to prominence, winning the WCW Women’s Championship in her debut match. She left WCW in 2001 and joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE).

As a member of the WWF’s stable D-Generation X, she became the first woman to hold the WWF Intercontinental Championship and held it twice. She was also the first woman to participate in the Royal Rumble and King of the Ring events, as well as the first woman to be a member of the New Age Outlaws. After leaving the WWF in 2001, Laurer made sporadic wrestling appearances until 2008.

Outside of wrestling, Laurer had a brief career in pornography. She also appeared in mainstream television, most notably on the reality show The Surreal Life in 2005.

Laurer died of an accidental overdose of alcohol and prescription drugs on April 20, 2016, at the age of 46.

Early Life

Joan Marie Laurer was born in Rochester, New York on December 27, 1969. Her father, Joseph Laurer, was an engineer, and her mother, Janet Cearley, was a teacher. She has two older sisters, Kathy and Lynn.

Laurer was raised in a working-class family and began playing sports at an early age. She participated in track and field events in high school. She also briefly played football for her high school team.

After graduating from high school in 1987, Laurer began studying for a degree in psychology at the University of Tampa. She dropped out of college after one semester and began working as a bodyguard for adult film stars in Los Angeles.

Professional wrestling

In 1996, Laurer was recruited by World Championship Wrestling (WCW) after attending a WCW show with her then-boyfriend Kevin Nash. Nash introduced her to WCW booker Eric Bischoff, who hired her as a bodyguard for Lex Luger and Sting. Laurer made her in-ring debut at Halloween Havoc in October 1997, defeating Jackie Moore in a hardcore match.

In 1998, Laurer joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE). She quickly rose to prominence, winning the WWF Women’s Championship from Sable in her debut match at No Mercy in May 1998. She held the title for 56 days before losing it to Ivory at SummerSlam in August 1998.

In December 1998, Laurer formed the stable D-Generation X with Shawn Michaels and Triple H. The group quickly became one of the most popular acts in the WWF. Laurer became the first woman to hold the WWF Intercontinental Championship when she defeated Jeff Jarrett at No Way Out in February 1999. She held the title for 28 days before losing it to Road Dogg at WrestleMania XV in March 1999.

Laurer competed in the first-ever women’s Royal Rumble match at Royal Rumble in January 1999. She also competed in the King of the Ring tournament in June 1999, becoming the first woman to do so. Laurer was involved in a highly publicized relationship with fellow wrestler Sean Waltman during this time. The couple made a sex tape together that was released commercially in 2004 under the title 1 Night in China.

Laurer left the WWF in November 2001 after disagreements with management. She made sporadic wrestling appearances until 2008.

Acting and reality television

Laurer made her acting debut in the low-budget independent film 9½ Weeks II: The Long Hard Road Out of Hell (1997). She had a small role as a stripper in another independent film, 3rd Base (1999). In 2000, she appeared on an episode of 3rd Rock from the Sun as Janice, a wrestler who is hired by Dick Solomon (John Lithgow) to teach his son Tommy (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) how to wrestle.

In 2005, Laurer appeared on The Surreal Life, a reality show that follows celebrities as they live together in a house for two weeks. Laurer’s relationship with fellow cast member Nicolo Vicenti was a major storyline on the show. The couple got engaged on the show but broke up shortly after it ended.

In 2008, Laurer appeared on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, a reality show that documents celebrities struggling with addiction. Laurer admitted to struggling with alcoholism and an addiction to prescription drugs.

In 2004, Laurer made her debut in the adult film industry with the release of 1 Night in China. The film was co-produced by Waltman and featured footage of the couple’s real-life sex tape. Laurer followed up with another adult film, Backdoor to Chyna (2005). In 2011, she appeared in another adult film called She Hulk XXX: An Axel Braun Parody.

Laurer died of an accidental overdose of alcohol and prescription drugs on April 20, 2016, at the age of 46.
