Born Carol Kaye in 1935 in Everett, Washington, she was the only child of her parents. Her father was a truck driver and her mother was a housewife. When she was four years old, her family moved to Los Angeles, California.
Kaye began playing the violin when she was eight years old, but after hearing a Gene Krupa drum solo on the radio, she switched to playing the drums. She began playing professionally when she was in high school, and after graduation, she toured with various bands throughout the United States.
In 1957, she began playing bass guitar after hearing Ray Brown play. She quickly developed her own style of playing, which combined the techniques of both the upright bass and the electric guitar.
Kaye’s first major break came in 1962 when she was asked to play on Brian Wilson’s “Surfin’ Safari.” She went on to play on Wilson’s “Pet Sounds” album, as well as on The Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations” and “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.”
In addition to her work with The Beach Boys, Kaye also played on recordings by such artists as Phil Spector, The Wrecking Crew, The Righteous Brothers, The Mamas and the Papas, Simon and Garfunkel, The Byrds, and many others.
Kaye has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Musicians Hall of Fame. In addition to her work as a musician, she has also written several books on the subject of music, including “How To Play The Electric Bass.”
Kaye is currently retired and living in Los Angeles, California.
