Carl Palmer is an English drummer and percussionist who is best known for being a member of the progressive rock bands Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP) and Asia. He has been a professional musician since the 1960s, and has also worked as a solo artist and session musician.

Palmer was born on March 20, 1950, in Birmingham, England. His father was a jazz drummer, and his mother was a singer. He has two older sisters. Palmer began playing drums at an early age, and by the time he was 10 years old, he was already playing in local clubs. He attended the Birmingham College of Music, where he studied percussion and composition.

After college, Palmer began working as a session musician. He played on several albums by the band Atomic Rooster, and also toured with them as their drummer. In 1981, Palmer co-founded the supergroup Asia with John Wetton, Geoff Downes, and Steve Howe. Asia had a number of hits in the 1980s, including “Heat of the Moment” and “Only Time Will Tell.” The band has continued to tour and release new albums over the years, with Palmer remaining a member.

In addition to his work with ELP and Asia, Palmer has also released several solo albums and worked as a session musician with a variety of artists. He was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1989, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 as a member of ELP.
