Carl Hayden was born on October 2, 1877, in Hayden’s Ferry, Arizona. His parents were Charles and Sallie Hayden. He had four brothers and sisters. His early education was in the public schools of Arizona. He worked on his father’s farm and ranch and later became a cowboy. He also worked as a surveyor and a construction worker.
In 1900, Hayden was elected to the Arizona Territorial Legislature. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1907 to 1927. He was a member of the Democratic Party. In 1912, he was elected to the U.S. Senate. He served in the Senate for 45 years, from 1913 to 1969. He was the Senate Majority Leader from 1937 to 1941.
Hayden was a supporter of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal programs. He also supported the civil rights movement. In 1964, he voted for the Civil Rights Act.
Hayden retired from the Senate in 1969. He died on January 25, 1972, in Phoenix, Arizona. He was 94 years old.
Hayden was married twice. His first wife was Nan Downing. They were married for 50 years. They had three children together. His second wife was Maude Evans. They were married for 23 years.
