Bob Smith was born on December 12, 1961, in Los Angeles, California, to John and Jane Smith. He has two older brothers, John and Mark. He attended public schools in Los Angeles and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in political science.

He began his political career working on the staff of California State Senator Alan Cranston. He later worked as a lobbyist for the California Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics. In 1992, he was elected to the California State Assembly, representing the 43rd district. He served in the Assembly until 2000, when he was elected to the California State Senate, representing the 27th district.

In the Senate, he served as chairman of the Health Committee and the Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee. He was also a member of the Education Committee and the Transportation and Housing Committee. He authored or co-authored more than 200 bills that were signed into law, including measures to improve access to health care, increase funding for public schools, and improve public transportation.

In 2010, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing California’s 25th congressional district. He served on the House Education and the Workforce Committee and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. He was also a member of the House Democratic leadership team, serving as Assistant Whip.

He did not seek re-election in 2016, instead running for the U.S. Senate. He was elected to the Senate in 2016 and currently serves on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee and the Senate Finance Committee.

Bob Smith is unmarried and has no children.
