Barbara Hershey was born Barbara Lynn Herzstein in Hollywood, California, on February 5, 1948. Her mother, Melrose (née Rogers), was a actress, and her father, Arnold Nathan Herzstein, was a horse racing columnist and sportswriter. She has a younger brother, Bruce. Hershey’s parents divorced when she was three years old and she was raised by her mother.
Hershey attended Hollywood High School, where she was a cheerleader and homecoming queen. She then attended UCLA, where she majored in drama. After graduation, she moved to New York City, where she worked as a waitress and an actress.
In 1968, Hershey appeared in the film Last Summer with Bruce Davison and Richard Thomas. The following year, she appeared in the film The Sterile Cuckoo with Liza Minnelli. In 1970, Hershey starred in the film Love Story with Ryan O’Neal.
