August Gailit (born October 10, 1977) is an Estonian writer, best known for his novel Mees, kes teadis ussisõnu (The Man Who Knew the Worm-Tongue).
Gailit was born in Tallinn, Estonia, to a family of Estonian and German descent. His father was an engineer and his mother was a homemaker. He has two older sisters. He attended Tallinn Secondary School No. 21 and graduated from the University of Tartu with a degree in comparative literature.
Gailit’s first novel, Mees, kes teadis ussisõnu, was published in 2006 and won the Estonian Cultural Endowment’s annual award for best debut novel. The novel tells the story of Jakob, a man who can understand the language of worms, and his search for meaning in a world that seems to have none.
Gailit’s second novel, Kõik on hästi (Everything is Fine), was published in 2008. The novel follows the lives of two young women, Liina and Maarja, as they try to find their place in the world.
Gailit’s third novel, Viimane vaatus (The Last Act), was published in 2010. The novel tells the story of a group of people who are brought together by a shared love of theatre.
Gailit’s fourth novel, Tõde ja õigus (Truth and Justice), was published in 2012. The novel is a sequel to Mees, kes teadis ussisõnu, and follows Jakob as he tries to find his place in the world after the death of his wife.
Gailit’s fifth novel, Valge daam (The White Lady), was published in 2014. The novel tells the story of a woman who is haunted by the ghost of her dead husband.
Gailit’s sixth novel, must valge (Black and White), was published in 2016. The novel is a sequel to Viimane vaatus, and follows the characters as they try to make sense of their lives after the death of their friend.
Gailit’s seventh novel, Kaksikud (The Twins), was published in 2018. The novel tells the story of two brothers who are separated at birth and grow up on opposite sides of the world.
Gailit’s eighth novel, Põrgupõhja uus vanapagan (The New Old-Fashioned Witch of the Underworld), was published in 2020. The novel is a sequel to Tõde ja õigus, and follows Jakob as he tries to find his place in the world after the death of his wife.
Gailit has also published two collections of short stories, Mälestused metsast (Memories of the Forest) and Nädalavahetused Pariisis (Weekends in Paris).
Gailit is married to Estonian writer and translator Kristiina Ehin. They have two daughters.
