Arthur Holmes was born in England on January 1, 1892. His parents were both teachers. He had two brothers and one sister. His early education was at a local school in England. He then attended the University of Edinburgh, where he studied geology. After graduation, he worked for a mining company in Scotland. He then moved to the United States, where he worked for the United States Geological Survey.

He is best known for his work on the age of the Earth. He developed a method for dating rocks using radioactive decay. This method is still used today. He also did important work on the theory of continental drift.

He was married twice and had four children. His first wife died in an accident. His second wife was a writer.

He died on April 20, 1964, in Washington, D.C., at the age of 72.
