Angela Rippon, OBE (born 12 October 1944) is an English television journalist, newsreader and presenter. She was the first regular female newsreader on British television, and presented some of the BBC’s flagship news programmes for more than 20 years.
Rippon was born in Plymouth, Devon, the daughter of Muriel (née Burden) and Ronald Rippon. She was educated at Plymouth High School for Girls and then the University of Plymouth, where she studied English.
Rippon began her career as a journalist with the Western Morning News in Plymouth, before joining the BBC as a reporter in 1966. She quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a newsreader on BBC Radio 4 in 1968 and the first regular female newsreader on BBC Television in 1969. She went on to present a number of flagship news programmes for the BBC, including Nine O’Clock News (1975–76), Newsnight (1980–82) and Breakfast Time (1983–84).
Rippon retired from full-time broadcasting in 2006, but has continued to make occasional appearances on television and radio. She has also written several books, including her autobiography, Angela Rippon’s Britain (2007).
Rippon was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2006 New Year Honours for services to broadcasting.
