Alexander Bailey was born on October 5, 1847, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Sarah and John Bailey. He was the oldest of four children. His father was a carpenter and his mother was a homemaker. Bailey was educated in the public schools of Bridgeport and graduated from high school in 1865. He then attended the University of Vermont, where he studied civil engineering. He graduated from Vermont in 1869.
After graduation, Bailey returned to Bridgeport and began working for the Bridgeport and Port Jefferson Steamboat Company as a civil engineer. He designed and built several of the company’s boats, including the steamship Connecticut. He also worked on the company’s docks and wharves. In 1871, Bailey married Ellen Curtis. The couple had two children.
In 1873, Bailey left the steamboat company and began working for the Bridgeport Herald as a reporter. He later became the city editor of the newspaper. In 1876, he began working for the Bridgeport Evening Post as a reporter and editor. He remained with the newspaper until 1881.
In 1881, Bailey was hired by the New York Times as a reporter. He was assigned to the paper’s Washington, D.C., bureau. He covered the presidential election of 1884 and the inauguration of President Grover Cleveland. He also covered Congress and the Supreme Court.
In 1886, Bailey returned to Bridgeport and purchased the Bridgeport Evening Farmer. He served as the newspaper’s editor and publisher until his death in 1896.
Alexander Bailey was a successful journalist and newspaperman. He was also a skilled boat builder and engineer. He died on December 11, 1896, at his home in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
