Albert Johnson (born April 18, 1987) is a Canadian professional mixed martial artist who is currently signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He is the former Interim UFC Lightweight Champion. As of May 18, 2020, he is #5 in the UFC lightweight rankings.
Johnson was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He began his mixed martial arts (MMA) career in 2006, and won his first eight fights before signing with the UFC in 2009. He made his UFC debut against Brad Blackburn at UFC 96, winning via knockout in the first round.
Johnson then went on to win five more fights in the UFC, including a TKO victory over Joe Stevenson at UFC on Versus 3, before losing to Benson Henderson in a title bout at UFC on Fox 5. He rebounded from this loss with a decision win over Gleison Tibau at UFC 168.
In 2014, Johnson won three straight fights, including a knockout of Josh Thomson at UFC on Fox 10, which earned him a title shot against Anthony Pettis at UFC 185. Johnson lost the bout via submission in the first round.
Johnson then won two more fights before being matched up against Eddie Alvarez at UFC Fight Night 90. Johnson won the fight via knockout in the first round, becoming the interim UFC Lightweight Champion. He was then scheduled to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov for the undisputed title at UFC 206, but the bout was cancelled due to Nurmagomedov’s weight cut issues.
Johnson next fought Justin Gaethje at The Ultimate Fighter 25 Finale, winning via knockout in the second round. This win earned him a performance of the night bonus.
Johnson is currently scheduled to face Tony Ferguson for the interim UFC Lightweight Championship at UFC 216 on October 7, 2017.
