Ace Frehley is an American musician and songwriter, best known as the former lead guitarist and founding member of the rock band Kiss. He is considered one of the most influential guitarists of the 1970s and 1980s, and is credited with helping to pioneer the sound of Kiss. Frehley’s solos often made use of high-pitched, screeching feedback, and he was known for his “spaceman” persona and his distinctive “smoking guitar” gimmick.

Frehley was born in The Bronx, New York City, on April 27, 1951. His father, Carl, was a transit police officer, and his mother, Esther, was a homemaker. He has two older sisters, Lisa and Janice. Frehley’s father encouraged his son’s interest in music, buying him his first guitar when he was 14 years old. Frehley began taking guitar lessons from a local teacher, but he was largely self-taught. He cites Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Pete Townshend as his main influences.

Frehley’s first band was called The Space Ace Frehley Band. The band played cover songs by artists such as Cream, The Who, and Jimi Hendrix. They also wrote original material, but none of it was ever recorded. In 1973, Frehley was contacted by Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, who were looking for a lead guitarist for their new band, Kiss. Frehley agreed to join the band, and Kiss was officially formed in January 1974.

Kiss released their self-titled debut album in February 1974. The album was a commercial success, selling over three million copies. It included the hit singles “Strutter” and “Firehouse”. Kiss’ second album, Hotter Than Hell, was released in October 1974. The album failed to match the success of the debut, but still sold over one million copies.

In 1975, Kiss released their third album, Dressed to Kill. The album was another commercial success, selling over two million copies. It included the hit single “Rock and Roll All Nite”. Kiss’ fourth album, Destroyer, was released in March 1976. The album was a major success, selling over three million copies. It included the hit singles “Beth” and “Detroit Rock City”.

Destroyer was followed by Kiss’ fifth album, Rock and Roll Over, in November 1976. The album was another commercial success, selling over two million copies. It included the hit single “Calling Dr. Love”. In 1977, Kiss released their sixth album, Love Gun. The album was another commercial success, selling over three million copies. It included the hit singles “I Was Made for Lovin’ You” and “Christine Sixteen”.

In 1978, Kiss released their seventh album, Dynasty. The album was another commercial success, selling over two million copies. It included the hit singles “I Was Made for Lovin’ You” and “Sure Know Something”. In 1979, Kiss released their eighth album, Unmasked. The album was a commercial disappointment, selling only one million copies. It included the hit single “Shandi”.

In 1980, Kiss released their ninth album, Music from “The Elder”. The album was a commercial failure, selling only 400,000 copies. It was met with negative reviews from critics. In 1981, Kiss released their tenth album, Creatures of the Night. The album was another commercial failure, selling only 700,000 copies. It included the hit single “I Love It Loud”.

In 1982, Kiss released their eleventh album, Lick It Up. The album was a commercial success, selling over two million copies. It included the hit single “Lick It Up”. In 1983, Kiss released their twelfth album, Animalize. The album was another commercial success, selling over three million copies. It included the hit singles “Heaven’s on Fire” and “Burn Bitch Burn”.

In 1985, Kiss released their fourteenth album, Crazy Nights. The album was another commercial success, selling over three million copies. It included the hit singles “Crazy Crazy Nights” and “Who Wants to Be Lonely”.

In 1989, Kiss released their fifteenth album, Hot in the Shade. The album was another commercial success, selling over two million copies. It included the hit single “Forever”. In 1991, Kiss released their sixteenth album, Revenge. The album was another commercial success, selling over two million copies. It included the hit singles “Unholy” and “Spit”.

In 1996, Ace Frehley left Kiss to pursue a solo career. He released his debut solo album, Frehley’s Comet, in 1987. The album was a commercial success, selling over one million copies. It included the hit single “Rock Soldiers”. Frehley’s second solo album, Second Sighting, was released in 1988. The album failed to match the success of the debut, selling only 500,000 copies.

In 1989, Frehley reunited with Kiss for a successful reunion tour. The tour grossed over $80 million dollars. In 1996, Frehley once again left Kiss to focus on his solo career. He has released five solo albums since then: Anomaly (2009), Space Invader (2014), Origins Vol. 1 (2016), Origins Vol. 2 (2018), and Spaceman (2018).

Frehley is currently married to his wife Rachael Gordon. They have two children together: Monique and Jack Frehley Gordon-Sciacca. Frehley has an estimated net worth of $30 million dollars.

Quotes

1I knew I was destined to do a solo album, but when I did that first album in 1978, I had no idea it was going to be that well received.
2That's not my idea of what KISS is. Maybe that's his idea. You know, they say things like that just to cover their asses, so that they can carry on and still say it's KISS. That's all that is: smoke. [when asked if he agrees with Paul Stanley about the idea of KISS continuing without any of the original members].
3I eat, sleep, and drink my character. It is my fantasy to go to another planet. By the time I'm 40, interplanetary travel will be common. Nobody will want to talk to me at that age, anyway.
4I remember taking the cassette and smashing it against a wall" - to Guitar World magazine in 1993, describing his negative response to the 1981 KISS album, "Music From the Elder.
