Yokozuna was a Japanese-American professional wrestler who was active in the World Wrestling Federation from 1992 to 2000. He was a two-time WWF World Heavyweight Champion and a one-time WWF Tag Team Champion.
Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Yokozuna was of Samoan and Japanese descent. His grandfather, Peter Maivia, was also a professional wrestler. Yokozuna began his career in the Pacific Northwest Wrestling promotion in the early 1990s. He was signed by the WWF in 1992 and made his debut at that year’s Survivor Series.
Yokozuna quickly rose to prominence in the WWF, winning the WWF World Heavyweight Championship from Bret Hart at WrestleMania IX. He held the title for less than six months before losing it to Hulk Hogan. Yokozuna regained the title from Hogan at King of the Ring 1993, but lost it back to him a few months later at SummerSlam.
In 1994, Yokozuna formed a tag team with Owen Hart, with whom he won the WWF Tag Team Championship. The team held the titles for four months before losing them to The Smoking Gunns. Yokozuna’s final major storyline in the WWF came in 1996, when he feuded with The Undertaker. The feud culminated in a casket match at the Royal Rumble, which Yokozuna lost.
Yokozuna left the WWF in 2000 and retired from professional wrestling altogether in 2001. He died of a heart attack in 2010 at the age of 34.
Born Rodney Agatupu Anoaʻi in Honolulu, Hawaii, Yokozuna was of Samoan and Japanese descent. His grandfather, Peter Maivia, was also a professional wrestler. Yokozuna’s cousin, Dwayne Johnson, is also a professional wrestler and actor, better known by his ring name, The Rock.
