Terry Richardson (born August 14, 1965) is an American fashion and portrait photographer who has shot advertising campaigns for Marc Jacobs, Aldo, Supreme, Sisley, Tom Ford, and Yves Saint Laurent among others. He has also done work for magazines such as Rolling Stone, GQ, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, i-D, and Vice. Richardson’s work has been featured in the exhibitions “Beautiful Losers: Contemporary Art and Street Culture” at the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center and ” Terry Richardson” at the Brooklyn Museum.

Richardson was born in New York City, the son of Norma Kessler, an actress, and Bob Richardson, a fashion photographer who struggled with schizophrenia and drug abuse. Richardson has two sisters, Alex and Lola. His father died when Richardson was 10 years old. Richardson’s mother married the late Anthony Rich, a film producer, in 1974. Richardson was raised in Hollywood and the Rich family frequently socialized with celebrities such as Jack Nicholson, Dennis Hopper, and Warren Beatty.

Richardson began his career as a photographer in the early 1990s after moving to Los Angeles. He worked as an assistant to Herb Ritts and Annie Leibovitz before striking out on his own. His first major commission was a shoot for Rolling Stone with Dennis Hopper. Richardson’s style is characterized by its use of natural light, candid moments, and eroticism. His work often features young models in sexually suggestive poses.

Richardson has been the subject of criticism for his use of sexualized images of young women and girls. In 2010, model Emma Appleton accused Richardson of offering her a photo shoot in exchange for sex. In 2014, model Caron Bernstein accused Richardson of sexual assault. In 2015, model Charlotte Waters accused Richardson of sexual assault. Despite the accusations, Richardson has continued to work with major brands and publications.

Richardson is married to former Vogue Paris editor Alexandra Bolotow. The couple have two children.
