Sonny Barger is an American actor, author, and former president of the Oakland chapter of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club. He was born in Modesto, California, on October 8, 1938, to parents who were both members of the Hells Angels. Barger has two sisters and a brother. He was raised in Oakland, California, and attended Oakland High School. After high school, Barger joined the U.S. Army and served in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1960.
Barger began his career with the Hells Angels in 1957. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the president of the Oakland chapter in 1966. As president, Barger was responsible for the growth and expansion of the Hells Angels into new territories. He also oversaw the club’s illegal activities, which included drug dealing, prostitution, and extortion. In 1971, Barger was arrested for his involvement in the murder of a rival gang member. He was acquitted of all charges.
In the late 1970s, Barger began to distance himself from the Hells Angels. He retired from his position as president of the Oakland chapter in 1984. He has since remained an active member of the club.
Barger has appeared in a number of films and television shows, including Hells Angels on Wheels (1967), The Wild One (1953), and Sons of Anarchy (2008-2014). He has also written two books about his experiences with the Hells Angels: Hell’s Angel: The Life and Times of Sonny Barger and the Hell’s Angels Motorcycle Club (2000) and Riding with the Devil: The Inside Story of the Hell’s Angels Motorcycle Club (2006).
Barger’s net worth is estimated to be $5 million. He has been married three times and has four children.
