Sara Ramirez is a Tony Award-winning actress and singer, best known for her role as Dr. Callie Torres on the ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. She was born on August 31, 1975 in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico, to a Mexican father and an Irish-American mother. She has two older sisters. She was raised in San Diego, California, and graduated from Coronado School of the Arts in 1993. She then attended Juilliard, where she earned a degree in drama in 1997.

Ramirez’s first professional role was in the 1999 Broadway production of The Capeman, for which she won a Theatre World Award. She made her television debut in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2000. In 2005, she was cast as Dr. Callie Torres on Grey’s Anatomy. She remained with the show for 12 seasons, until 2016. During her time on Grey’s Anatomy, Ramirez won a Golden Globe Award and a Satellite Award, and was nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards.

In 2017, Ramirez began starring as Kat Sandoval on the CBS political drama Madam Secretary. She has also appeared in the films You’ve Got Mail (1998), Spider-Man (2002), and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004).

Ramirez is married to Ryan DeBolt, a business analyst. They have one child together, a daughter born in 2019.
