Sam Robards was born on December 16, 1961 in New York City, New York, USA. He is the son of actors Jason Robards and Lauren Bacall. His parents divorced when he was five years old, and he was raised by his mother in Los Angeles, California. He has two half-sisters, Leslie and Amy, from his father’s second marriage to actress Dina Merrill. Robards was educated at the High School for the Performing Arts in New York City and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Pasadena, California. He began his acting career in the 1980s, appearing in such films as Taps (1981), Starman (1984), and The Breakfast Club (1985). He has also appeared in television series such as L.

A. Law (1986-1994), Chicago Hope (1995-2000), and The West Wing (2002-2006). In addition to his acting career, Robards is also a director and producer. He has directed episodes of L. A. Law, Chicago Hope, and The West Wing, as well as the films The Myth of Fingerprints (1997) and A Good Baby (2000).

He has produced the films The Myth of Fingerprints, A Good Baby, and The Good Shepherd (2006). Robards has been married three times.
