Patrick Kielty is a stand-up comedian, television presenter and radio DJ from Northern Ireland. He is perhaps best known for hosting the BBC One comedy panel show, Have I Got News for You.

Born in Downpatrick, County Down, on 31 October 1971, Kielty is the son of a primary school teacher and a social worker. He has two older sisters. Kielty was educated at St Patrick’s Grammar School in Downpatrick and at Queen’s University Belfast, where he studied English and French.
Kielty’s first foray into the world of comedy was as a stand-up comedian in the early 1990s. He later became a regular on the Belfast comedy circuit and was a finalist in the BBC New Comedy Awards in 1996.
Kielty’s big break came in 2001 when he was asked to host Have I Got News for You. He has since hosted a number of other high-profile shows, including The Kumars at No. 42, Comic Relief and Sport Relief.
Kielty has also presented a number of documentaries, including Patrick Kielty Almost Live (2003), Patrick Kielty’s Northern Ireland (2004) and Patrick Kielty’s Great Irish Escape (2005).
In addition to his work on television, Kielty is also a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4’s The News Quiz and has hosted his own radio show, Patrick Kielty’s Hit Parade, on BBC Radio 2.
Kielty has been married to Cat Deeley, a television presenter, since 2012. The couple have two sons.

2 | Met Neil Armstrong in 2004 at a corporate event in County Kerry, Ireland, having decided to not mentioned the moon, and being the only one to not do so, Patrick became his friend for the day. They were put on a helicopter but the pilots may have felt obligated to be brave and fly in stormy weather. Control was lost, the helicopter lost altitude, Armstrong was visibly worried, other passengers were screaming and crying, however it later landed safely. Kielty says that after the flight Armstrong, the former test pilot and astronaut, told him, "that was as bad as it gets, don't get back on that helicopter". Kielty, says that's the day I nearly died as an "also on board". |
