Nevil Maskelyne was born on the 6th of October, 1732 in London, England. His father, Edmund Maskelyne, was a clergyman and his mother, Elizabeth Nevil, was the daughter of a baronet. Nevil had two brothers and two sisters. He was educated at Thetford Grammar School and later at St Paul’s School in London. In 1755, he entered Trinity College, Cambridge where he studied mathematics and astronomy. He graduated in 1758 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Nevil Maskelyne’s career in astronomy began in 1759 when he was appointed as the Royal Observatory’s Resident Computer. In this role, he calculated the positions of the planets and stars for the Nautical Almanac. He also observed and recorded solar eclipses and comets. In 1765, he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society.

In 1766, Nevil Maskelyne travelled to Schiehallion in Scotland to observe the transit of Venus. This expedition was part of a global effort to measure the distance from the Earth to the Sun. The data collected by Maskelyne and his team was used to calculate the AU (astronomical unit).

In 1768, Maskelyne was appointed as the fifth Astronomer Royal. He held this position for 42 years until his death in 1811. During his time as Astronomer Royal, he oversaw the construction of several observatories including the Royal Observatory at Greenwich and the Dunsink Observatory in Dublin. He also published several important works on astronomy including The British Catalogue of Stars (1786) and The Nautical Almanac (1767-1833).

Nevil Maskelyne married Elizabeth Tooke in 1773. The couple had four children together. Elizabeth died in 1813 and Nevil died two years later in 1811.
