Michael Fitzpatrick was born in Brooklyn, New York on July 16, 1976. His parents, both of Irish descent, were working class. Fitzpatrick was the oldest of four children. His early education took place in the New York City public school system. Fitzpatrick showed an early interest in music, and by his teenage years was playing in local bands. He also developed a love for basketball, and played on his high school team.
After high school, Fitzpatrick attended community college for a year before transferring to the University of Massachusetts. He graduated with a degree in English in 1999. Fitzpatrick then moved back to New York City, where he worked a series of odd jobs while trying to break into the music business. In 2000, he met Nate Ruess, with whom he would later form the band Fun. The two began writing songs together, and in 2008 they released their debut album, Aim and Ignite.
The album was a critical and commercial success, and launched the band into the mainstream. Their follow-up album, Some Nights, was even more successful, selling over two million copies and earning them a Grammy Award for Best New Artist. The band’s third album, We Are Young, topped the charts in over a dozen countries and won them another Grammy.
Fitzpatrick has also pursued a solo career, releasing his debut album in 2017. He is currently working on his second album.
