Melvin Dixon was born in Harlem, New York on December 2, 1950. His parents were both African American and his father was a Baptist minister. Dixon was the youngest of four children and his siblings were all older than him. Dixon’s early education was in the New York City public school system. He attended the High School of Music & Art in Manhattan and then went on to study at the City College of New York. After college, Dixon worked as a journalist for various publications, including The Village Voice and The New York Times.
He also taught English and creative writing at several colleges and universities, including Rutgers University and Columbia University. In 1984, Dixon published his first novel, Vanishing Rooms. The novel was well-received and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Dixon’s other novels include Trouble the Water (1986), Love’s Routine (1989), and Change of Address (1995). He also wrote a collection of short stories, entitled Other Countries (1987).
Dixon was a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship and the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. He died of AIDS-related complications on November 16, 1992.
