Mark-Paul Gosselaar was born on March 1, 1974, in Panorama City, California, to Paula, a homemaker, and Hans Gosselaar, a plant manager. He has four sisters: Lisa, Nancy, Stacy, and Linda. His father is of Dutch-Indonesian descent and his mother is of Dutch and German ancestry. He was raised as a Roman Catholic.

Gosselaar attended the High School of Performing Arts in Hollywood. He then attended the University of California, Los Angeles on a baseball scholarship, but dropped out after one year to pursue an acting career.

Gosselaar’s first acting role was on the short-lived television series Saved by the Bell: The New Class (1993–1994). He then played Zack Morris on the NBC sitcom Saved by the Bell (1989–1993), which aired for four seasons. After Saved by the Bell ended, Gosselaar starred on the short-lived primetime soap opera Hyperion Bay (1998) and the police drama NYPD Blue (2001–2002).

In 2006, Gosselaar starred in the ABC comedy-drama series Commander in Chief as Ryan Pierce, the love interest of Geena Davis’ character. The series was cancelled after one season.

From 2007 to 2008, Gosselaar starred as Pete Kaczmarek in the TNT police drama Raising the Bar. From 2009 to 2010, he starred as Jerry Kellerman in the ABC legal drama series The Defenders.

In 2012, Gosselaar began starring as Jared Franklin in the TNT legal drama series Franklin & Bash. The series was cancelled after four seasons.

In 2015, Gosselaar began starring as Detective Zachary “Zach” Morris in the NBC police procedural drama series NYPD Blue.

Gosselaar has also starred in the films Dead Man on Campus (1998), Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th (2000), The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004), and The Passage (2019).

1That may be a factor because we are the older show; we have been on the air for a while. Is it our day? Is it time to hang it up? But it seems that the show still continues, and we still enjoy being here. And that's a very important element.

19I have always had good strength in my legs from working out with weights. I have also been riding a bike of some sort for most of my life and have good agility.
20The biggest challenge has been simulating a tornado with wind machines and dirt and debris. Right when you walk on the set, you feel the energy of a tornado. But the hardest thing is trying to get dialogue out in all of that.
21But I plan on dedicating specific training to track this winter for the next racing season.
22I always have this feeling that I'm losing everything, so I'm a real saver.
