Lupe Ontiveros was born in El Paso, Texas on September 17, 1942. Her parents were Mexican immigrants who worked as farm laborers. She was the youngest of seven children and did not attend school past the third grade.
Ontiveros began her career working as a maid and in other odd jobs. In the early 1970s, she began appearing in small roles in film and television. She had a breakout role in the film Selena (1997), for which she received an ALMA Award.
Ontiveros has appeared in over 200 films and television shows. She has been nominated for several awards, including an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award.
