Kurt Schmoke was born on October 8, 1949, in Baltimore, Maryland. His father was a doctor and his mother was a teacher. He has two brothers and one sister. He attended Baltimore City College for high school and then went on to Yale University, where he graduated with a degree in History in 1971. After Yale, he attended Harvard Law School and graduated in 1974.
He began his career as a law clerk for a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. He then worked as an Assistant United States Attorney in Baltimore from 1975 to 1981. In 1982, he was elected to the Baltimore City Council, where he served for four years. In 1986, he was elected Mayor of Baltimore, becoming the first African American to hold that office. He served as Mayor for three terms, until 1999.
During his time as Mayor, he was known for his efforts to reduce crime and improve education in Baltimore. He also worked to improve relations between the police and the community. In 1993, he was appointed by President Bill Clinton to be the Chairman of the White House Drug Policy Task Force.
After leaving office, he became a professor at Howard University School of Law. He also served on the boards of several organizations, including the NAACP and the National Urban League. In 2009, he was appointed by President Barack Obama to be a member of the President’s Commission on White House Fellowships.
He is married to Patricia Schmoke and they have two children.
