Julia Stiles was born on March 28, 1981, in New York City, the eldest child of a business executive and a potter. She has a younger brother, Johnny, who is also an actor. Stiles began acting at age 11, performing with New York’s La MaMa Theatre Company. She appeared in several Off-Broadway productions, including “The Vagina Monologues” and “The Crucible.” She made her film debut in “I Love You, I Love You Not” (1996), opposite Claire Danes.

Stiles’ breakthrough role came in the 1999 teen thriller “Save the Last Dance.” She played a white girl who falls for a black hip-hop dancer (Sean Patrick Thomas) at a Chicago high school. The film was a box office hit, and Stiles earned an MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance. She followed up with another teen thriller, “The Skulls” (2000), and then starred opposite Heath Ledger in the 2001 romantic drama “The Princess Diaries.”

In 2002, Stiles appeared in two very different films: the action thriller “The Bourne Identity,” opposite Matt Damon, and the independent drama “Havoc,” in which she played a wealthy teenager who gets caught up in the world of drugs and gangs. She also starred in the short-lived TV series “The O.C.” that year.

In 2004, Stiles starred in the sequel to “The Bourne Identity,” “The Bourne Supremacy,” and in the romantic comedy “The Prince & Me.” The following year, she appeared in the final installment of the Bourne trilogy, “The Bourne Ultimatum.” She also starred opposite Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the independent drama “Brick.”

In 2008, Stiles starred in two films: the horror movie “The Strangers” and the comedy “My Soul to Take.” The following year, she appeared in the action thriller “The Bourne Legacy,” which was not as successful as the previous Bourne films. She also starred in the independent drama “It’s a Disaster” that year.

In 2010, Stiles had a supporting role in the Academy Award-winning film “The Social Network.” The following year, she starred in the romantic comedy “Monogamy” and the action thriller “The Debt.”

In 2012, Stiles starred in the independent drama “Silver Linings Playbook,” opposite Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. The film was a critical and commercial success, and Stiles earned rave reviews for her performance.

Stiles has also appeared on stage, starring in a Broadway production of David Mamet’s “Oleanna” in 2009. She also starred in an Off-Broadway production of Neil LaBute’s “Reasons to Be Pretty” in 2010.

Stiles’ net worth is estimated to be $16 million. She has earned millions from her work in films and television over the years.

1[on a scene that stands out most when looking back on her time on Dexter (2006)] In the kill room, when she first gets to put the knife in. That was really special. There was also a nice moment of collaboration where the set designers had put up pictures of all the other victims on the wall, and I remember saying to the director that I felt like it was important that Lumen acknowledge the other girls and say that it was for them, too. We did a separate shot of that, and it ended up in the final edit, which I was really pleased about. It's a great example of how collaborative the show is and what a nice environment it is to work in.
2[on the most challenging aspect of playing Lumen in Dexter (2006)] - I never think of myself as an actor who takes work home with them, but I was surprised, especially toward the end of the season -- around episode 10 -- when some of the details of what Lumen had experienced became really harrowing, and I started to realize that it was affecting me outside of work. One scene in particular, in episode 10, when the detectives have found DVDs showing what has happened to the victims -- it was really dark. It made it more difficult for me to sleep.
3I think audiences, producers and directors included, develop crushes on actors (actresses in particular) and then lose interest and move on to the next one. [...] There are a handful of actors who sustain interest because it's exciting to watch them get better at what they do. I want to be one of those actors.
4I was gonna throw the first pitch at a Mets game, but there was a rain delay. So I'm waiting for it to stop, and the team's manager, Willie Randolph, comes by. Now he's already intimidating to begin with. But he comes over to me and says, 'If you screw this up, they will boo you.' And I said 'Thanks.'
5I am a big fan of horror movies but I had never thought that I had wanted to act in one because I don't think that actors get to do much in them. They're usually just reacting.
