Joseph Cortese is an American actor, director, and producer. He is best known for his role as Tony DeVienazo in the HBO series The Sopranos.
Cortese was born on April 16, 1951 in Paterson, New Jersey, USA. He is the son of Josephine (née Rizzi) and Salvatore Cortese. He has two brothers, John and Salvatore Jr., and a sister, Carmela. His father was of Italian descent and his mother was of Irish descent.
Cortese was educated at Seton Hall Preparatory School in West Orange, New Jersey and at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey.
He began his acting career in the early 1970s, appearing in such films as The Godfather Part II (1974), Taxi Driver (1976), and Raging Bull (1980). He has also appeared in television shows such as Kojak, Miami Vice, and Law & Order.
In 1999, Cortese began appearing in the HBO series The Sopranos as Tony DeVienazo, a close friend and associate of Tony Soprano. He appeared in a total of 46 episodes over the course of the show’s six seasons.
Since The Sopranos ended in 2007, Cortese has appeared in a number of films and television shows, including The Good Wife, Blue Bloods, and Boardwalk Empire. He has also directed episodes of The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire.
Cortese has been married to his wife, Nancy, since 1978. They have two children together.
